Shadow banks in China operate by pooling household and corporate savings to offer loans to invest in real estate, stocks, bonds, and commodities. Companies such as Zhongzhi have often financed many large Chinese property developers. Hong Kong listed shares of property firms including Logan Group, China Vanke, Sunac and Longfor Group dropped between 2% and 3.6%. More pain for shadow banks? China's government has in the last few years tried to limit the rapid growth of non-bank debt issued by shadow banks.

"We believe this will allow all of our businesses to become more agile, enhance their business decision-making, and respond faster to market changes," CEO Daniel Zhang told investors. "Alibaba Group will be in the nature of a holding company that is the controlling shareholder of the business group companies," Zhang said. When asked about the timeline of Alibaba's restructuring, Zhang said the "strategy and business planning for the business groups will commence immediately." CFO Tony Xu said separating Alibaba's entities would allow it to determine the performance of each business. "We believe that the market is the best litmus test so each business group company can pursue independent fundraising and IPOs as and when they are ready after going public," he said.
Maike's absence has encouraged some direct trade between sellers and buyers in the market but they face challenges. Fitch Solutions expects China's copper consumption to rise 4.4% this year, after just 1.5% growth in 2022. Anti-pandemic restrictions had also prolonged smelter maintenance and curtailed copper production growth last year, especially in the Guangdong area. Some smelters there have hiked their offers for 2023 copper premiums to 300 yuan a tonne, up from 200 yuan a tonne last year, a Shanghai-based trader said. While Maike's disappearance from the import market has been blamed for disrupting supplies and pricing, China's refined copper imports increased 6.6% in 2022, according to customs data.
